Steve Miller, one of the first artists to paint genetic portraits, has recently turned his attention to the structure of proteins as in his Eat Protein series (pictured). Consulting with Dn Rod MacKinnon, a molecular biologist at Rockefeller University, Miller uses computer simulations to investigate the new scientific geld of proteomics. This field, emerging from genomic studies, seeks to identify all the proteins expressed by a genome and their roles in physiology and pathology. In paintings and drawings, the artist portrays the three-dimensional structural patterns envisioned by this new molecular technology.
