Can one renew the art of the portrait ? Steve Miller, young New York artist, responds yes, and introduces a collection of people. The art critic Pierre Restany, a psychiatrist, a writer, the art dealer Bob Benamou, close friends, the artist’s mother, and a self-portrait are represented without apparent resemblance, but truer than nature. At the bottom of irrefutable personal information are: the x-ray of the brain, the teeth or the spine of his models (patients), inspected by radiology and MRI (magnetic resonance image). Until now, the objective of Steve Miller working with these scientific images could seem vague. But this time, when he places these new images in his work around the concept of the portrait it all makes sense. Probably because the artist masters more and more his means and his motifs, and that he works the skin of his paintings by mixing the clinical techniques with his personal approach to the subjects whom he saves from anonymity by placing together beauty, humor, warmth, humanity and great respect.

Peut-on renouveler l’art du portrait? Steve Miller, jeune artiste new-yorkais, répond oui et présente toute une galerie de personnages. Le critique d’art Pierre Restany, un psychanalyste, un écrivain, le galeriste Bob Benamou, des amis proches, la mère de l’artiste, un autoportrait y figurent, sans ressemblance apparente, mais plus vrais que nature, à base d’informations personnelles irréfutables: les radiographies du crâne, des dents, ou de l’épine dorsale de ces modèles «patients», passés au rayon X, à la RMN (image à résonance magnétique nucléaire, et non réunion des musées nationaux!) L’objectif de Steve Miller composant avec des données scientifiques pouvait jusque-là paraître vague. Pas cette fois, où sa mise en oeuvre des nouvelles images autour de l’idée de «portraits intérieurs» prend tout son sens. Probablement parce que l’artiste maitrise da mieux en mieux ses spectres st ses motifs, et qu’il peut travailler la peau de ses tableaux en faisant coincider résultats cliniques et approche personnelle des sujets, qu’il sort de l’anonymat, en y mettant de la beauté, de l’humour, de la chaleur, de l’humanité, et beaucoup de respect. – G.
