“Health of the Planet”
January 9, 2013 through February 27th
Bern, Switzerland
The Brazilian rainforests are the lungs of our planet and I decided to give Brazil a medical check-up by taking x-rays of these lungs through the flora and fauna“, explains Steve Miller. He traveled to the Amazon, where he plucked plants, took them to a hospital in Sao Paulo, and X-rayed them. The images are ghostly, but Miller doesn’t stop there. He makes silkscreen prints over scans of the X-rays. While all photography arrests motion, it is only the X ray that allows us to climb inside a particular moment and subject and parse the structure of its beauty from within. Today, the natural world is under great stress and Miller’s art metaphorically highlights a planet that is being sacrificed for human kind’s progress.
